Por muito fácil que seja, por vezes, deixar o entusiasmo ceder à hipérbole e declarar uma banda “a melhor de sempre”, o mais difícil, após assistir a este extraordinário retrato dos Swans, é não o fazer.
Formados no início dos anos 80 numa Nova Iorque que foi epicentro de revoluções musicais tão díspares como os Sonic Youth e Madonna, os Swans, liderados desde sempre por Michael Gira e originários do mesmo caldeirão comunitário que geriu os nomes acima mencionados, construíram uma das mais singulares carreiras do rock moderno; começaram por ser uma brutalmente confrontacional e indomável força do pós-punk, tentaram e falharam estrondosamente o salto para o mundo indie que se aproximava em vertigem do mainstream no início dos anos 90, acabaram durante mais de uma década, e retornaram já em 2010 precisamente num ponto só deles, agora, felizmente, com o amplo reconhecimento da crítica e uma base de fãs que ainda hoje cresce diariamente.
Ao longo de todas essas peripécias, um traço em comum: a intensidade esmagadora dos seus concertos, verdadeiros tour-de-force de volume e duração e uma experiência transformadora e inesquecível para todos os sortudos. E é precisamente esta ritualidade da “experiência Swans” que o realizador Marco Porsia consegue, notavelmente, transpor para este documentário que o SONICA EKRANO apresenta na sua versão longa: 160 minutos de uma cosmologia única, o mundo transcendente e incomparável de Michael Gira e, sim, de uma das melhores bandas de sempre.


Where Does a Body End? is an intimate portrait of the band Swans, from their roots as a brutal, confrontational post-punk band that emerged from the same early 1980s era NYC that gave us Sonic Youth (and, somehow, Madonna) through their ill-fated bid at mainstream success in the 90s indie-rock goldrush, through breakups and chaos (on and offstage) to their odds-defying current status as one of the most accomplished and ambitious bands in the world, one whose concerts are more like ecstatic rituals than nostalgic trips back through their most popular songs.
Marco Porsia (director/cinematographer/editor) embedded himself in the band's tight inner circle for five years, filming rehearsals, songwriting sessions, the grind of life on the road, petty arguments and transcendent performances. The time documenting the band included the recording of some of their most significant records and the final months on the road as they prepared for their farewell tour.
Swans has always been a collection of singular performers, but there’s been one constant since it’s formation in 1982 - singer, songwriter Michael Gira. His biography (teenage runaway, art school provocateur, alcoholic, family man) and influences (Jimmy Swaggart casts a shadow as large as the Germs) are inseparable from the story of the band and the music they make.
With unfettered access to hundreds of hours of Gira/Swans archives of never-seen-before recordings, videos and photographs, the film brings us along the path they needed to carve for themselves. The film is many things, a musical history, a time-capsule, a tour diary, a concert film, but mostly it’s the story of a life in the arts, frequently difficult, spanning decades without a safety net, creating the work because, as Gira says “What else am I going to do?”
As bandmate Thor Harris notes, “Michael is not a fearless person, but he is a fearless artist.”
